WICKED is coming to Bristol!
RECORD-BREAKING WICKED UK TOUR IS FLYING IN TO BRISTOL
AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL TO OPEN AT THE HIPPODROME
TICKETS GO ON SALE ON TUESDAY 18 FEBRUARY 2014 AT 10AM
WICKED, the global musical phenomenon that tells the incredible untold story of the Witches of Oz, will continue its critically acclaimed, record-breaking UK and Ireland tour, opening at The Bristol Hippodrome in February 2015. Tickets for “this thrillingly entertaining show” (Manchester Evening News) will go on sale on 18 February 2014 at 10am.
Executive Producer Michael McCabe said: “We are truly honoured to present Wicked at this historic Frank Matcham-designed theatre that has been hosting world class productions for 100 years. We are extremely proud of this new production of Wicked, and there couldn't be a better environment to showcase our spectacular sets and costumes than the majestic auditorium of this wonderful venue".
Christiaan de Villiers, General Manager of The Bristol Hippodrome said: “We are thrilled that we are able to announce that the global musical phenomenon Wicked will be opening here at The Bristol Hippodrome in just over a year’s time. What better way can there be to kick start 2015 with this Broadway and West End blockbuster that will have our patrons spellbound. A year may seem a long time away but we would definitely advise people to book early as we expect an unprecedented demand for tickets which will be flying out the door.”
The spectacular touring production of Wicked has already broken countless Box Office records, won 5 star reviews from multiple critics and standing ovations from the public at every performance. The Irish Times raved: “from the opening chorus, the whirl of light and colour that is Wicked grabs you and doesn’t let go”.
Acclaimed as “a magical mystery tour through the fantasy land of Oz" (London Evening Standard), the hugely successful London production continues its open-ended run at the Apollo Victoria Theatre where it is already the 15th longest-running musical in West End theatre history.
Wicked has already been seen by over 38 million people around the world and has 9 productions running concurrently. The original Broadway production remains “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” (The New York Times) after a decade at the Gershwin Theatre. The West End production is now in its 8th year and recently celebrated its 3000th performance. Wicked has won over 90 international awards.
In a brilliantly witty re-imagining of the stories and characters created by L. Frank Baum in ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’, Wicked tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two sorcery students. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
Wicked has music and lyrics by multi GRAMMY® and Academy Award® winner Stephen Schwartz, a book by
Winnie Holzman, musical staging by Wayne Cilento and is directed by two-time Tony Award® winner and Olivier Award nominee Joe Mantello. Wicked is based on the acclaimed novel, ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’, by Gregory Maguire.
Wicked is produced by: Marc Platt, Universal Pictures Stage Productions, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone. Executive Producer (UK): Michael McCabe.

Cinderella at The Bristol Hippodrome is the ONLY Pantomime to see this year- Pure and Simple!
With Christmas fast approaching, there are a number of events in which to get involved with from meet and greets with Santa and his reindeer at The Winter Gardens, to ice skating in front of the castle at Cribbs Causeway followed by a hot chocolate and marshmallows and everything in between, it becomes quite challenging to fit it all in!
There is one event not to be missed this year though and that is the fantastic Pantomime at The Bristol Hippodrome which welcomes Suzanne Shaw, Louie Spence and the return of comical genius Andy Ford for this years Pantomime spectacular, Cinderella. I have been to the pantomime at The Hippodrome for the past 3 years and could not envision going to see a Pantomime anywhere else, it feels like home. This show will not disappoint- with the beautiful setting of the theatre itself and the fantastic productions I have seen to date, this is a family show for all to enjoy and with a comical duo like Andy Ford and Louie Spence, the likes of which the theatre has never seen, you are guaranteed a number of laughs along the way.
Suzanne Shaw will take the title role of Cinderella, in this year’s festive spectacular. She will join TV personality Louie Spence as Dandini and comedian Andy Ford as Buttons along with David Roper as Baron Hardup and Liz Robertson as Fairy Godmother.
Suzanne had one of the fastest selling singles of all time as a member of the pop group Hear’say. She has starred in West End musicals including Chicago, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and The Rocky Horror Show. Suzanne played Eve Jensen in the hit soap Emmerdale and won the third series of ITV show Dancing on Ice.
Suzanne said: “I am really excited and looking forward to playing Cinderella in Bristol later in the year. I know it’s going to be lots of fun having played alongside Louie Spence in Manchester in 2011”.
Louie Spence (ITV’s Dancing on Ice, Sky TV’s Pineapple Dance Studio and Louie Spence’s Showbusiness) wowed audiences at Milton Keynes Theatre last year by performing the role of Dandini in the pantomime Cinderella, breaking box office records and receiving outstanding reviews. West Country comedian Andy Ford needs no introduction to Bristol audiences as he returns to his home from home for his fifth Christmas season.
'Louie Spence is Panto perfect'
The Public Reviews
'This special edition Cinderella is five-star family entertainment packed with a lot of cheek and a ton of fairy dust!'
Leighton Buzzard Observer
Having heard about The Bristol Hippodrome’s panto successes, Louie made a special request to take to the stage here this Christmas. Louie thoroughly enjoyed playing Dandini after receiving standing ovations at every performance – so much so, that he wanted to reprise the role again this year.
Louie today said “I can’t wait to get my panto sparkle back on this Christmas. The Bristol Hippodrome is an amazing theatre and I’m sure the audiences and I will have a ball!”
After graduating from a three year scholarship at London Studio Centre, Louie joined the original Award-Winning cast of Miss Saigon and Cats. Louie’s career has seen him open his own successful dance agency Edit Agency and dance with pop legends Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder ,Take That, E17, 2 Unlimited, Boyzone, Eternal, Björk, Kavanagh, Kim Mazelle , Jocelyn Brown and the Spice Girls . Prior to becoming a household name on BAFTA nominated series Pineapple Dance Studios, Louie also enjoyed success in the UK and US in Bump N Grind, Big Brother’s Big Mouth, Battle Pop Stars, My Bare Lady, Benidorm, Swinging with the Finkels and Celebrity Circus, where he was voted by Hollywood.com as one of the Top Ten Reality Show Judges in America. Following the success of Pineapple Dance Studios, Louie starred in his own Sky1 series, Louie Spence's Showbusiness and has become a regular on radio and TV panel shows such as Chris Moyles' Quiz Night, The Jonathan Ross Show, Top Gear, Loose Women, Celebrity Juice and Harry Hill's TV Burp and was a judge on Dancing On Ice.
Along with the dance a minute Dandini and our unsung hero Buttons, Cinderella features a glittering combination of everything a traditional pantomime could wish for, a handsome Prince, enchanting Fairy Godmother and the boo-able Ugly Sisters. With a sprinkling of magic from the Fairy Godmother, will Cinderella beat the clock and find the happy ending she deserves? You’ll have to wait until the clock strikes midnight to find out!

English National Ballet LE CORSAIRE
Le Corsaire is based on Lord Byron’s poem Corsaire and tells the story of Conrad, a dashing pirate, and his love for Medora, the beautiful harem girl. It is a swashbuckling drama of captive maidens, rich sultans, kidnap and rescue, disguise and conspiracy, love and betrayal, culminating in a shipwreck which is one of the most breath-taking spectacles in ballet.
English National Ballet’s Artistic Director Tamara Rojo said: “Le Corsaire is one of the great classics created by Marius Petipa for the Mariinsky Theatre. Like all great Russian classics it is a true epic story that offers drama, an exotic landscape and the best pyrotechnics of the classic technique. It’s a men’s ballet, with heroic and passionate characters and with the famous pas de deux that made a legend of Nureyev when he first performed in England with Dame Margot Fonteyn. This is a unique and unmissable opportunity as it has never before been performed by a British company.”
“We are working with Anna-Marie Holmes who created this version more than a decade ago and she is willing to change it to make it specific for us. In reinventing Le Corsaire we have the chance to go through the whole narrative and look at it with fresh eyes, making it even better and personal to the Company. I am excited that this is a ballet with four male principal roles. Unlike many of the classics it will give great opportunities to the men in the Company to show off their skills and athleticism”.
“We are also re-orchestrating the work because there have been many additions over the years. I want the music to sound more romantic and cleaner as it would have originally. And I am thrilled that Bob Ringwood, the amazing designer of Batman, has agreed to design the sets and the costumes.”
Bob Ringwood, whose film credits include Batman. Alien 3, Star Trek Nemesis and Troy, explains his ambitions for the piece: ‘’DesigningLe Corsaire, I thought it would be interesting to bring out the romantic and historic elements of the original ballet. I hope to capture the flavour of the Romantic period in which it was first staged. The sets and costumes are based on original paintings, prints and engravings of the mid-19th Century to capture and infuse the essence of the period. I felt it was important to bring out the romantic, sensual and erotic elements of the piece, which have been so neglected in recent productions. The sensuality of the women and bravado and swagger of the men, for us all to enjoy those heavily scented and perfumed Arabian Nights that so captivated Orientalist painters and writers of the second half of the 19th Century."

White Christmas is coming to Bristol Hippodrome soon
White Christmas coming to The Bristol Hippodrome- Tuesday 19th- Saturday 23rd November 2013
The stars of the future are once again on show at The Bristol Hippodrome this November when Bristol's own multi award-winning production company, BLOC Productions, welcome you to their winter wonderland with Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.
This spectacular stage musical of Bing Crosby’s classic 1954 movie is brimming with classic Irving Berlin hits like Blue Skies, How Deep is the Ocean? Happy Holiday, Sisters and of course the unforgettable title song White Christmas.
Based on the heart warming Paramount film, White Christmas tells the story of two army buddies, Bob and Phil, who have a successful song and dance act after the 2nd World War. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters to a Christmas gig at a lodge in upstate Vermont, which just happens to be owned by their former Army commander. They soon realise on arrival they are the only guests at the skiing lodge due to the lack of snow!
How will they help the General bring in the crowd? Will love blossom? Will they make it a Christmas Eve to remember? Or do they need to send for the Army?
With an ensemble of over 50 incredible performers and a dynamic live orchestra, this production is full of tap dancing, lavish sets, beautiful costumes, lots of laughter and some of the greatest songs ever written.
Susanne Donovan Chairman of Bloc Productions commented ‘This year is Blocs’s 80th anniversary and we wanted to honour this milestone with a truly magical and spectacular musical. This is the first time White Christmas has been to the Hippodrome stage and it promises to be a fun filled show leaving the audiences singing all the way home”
So make Christmas 2013 the one you’ve been dreaming of with BLOCS own interpretation of the musical that promises to be a merry and bright theatrical experience for everyone

When: September 21st/22nd 2013- Where: Weston super Mare town centre - Time: 10am – 5.:30pm-
Cost: Admission Free
If you love food you’ll love the Weston Super Food Festival!
We can promise a tasty celebration of all that’s good about real food. And that means food that’s produced by small producers with love and care using quality ingredients to deliver great taste and real flavour.
The festival will focus on local and regional produce showcasing all the wonderful food and drink that’s made the West Country famous. We are ardent supporters of local shopping but you’ll also find specialist food that you might not be able to source locally from some of the best award winning organic and artisan producers from around the UK.
As you browse, taste and buy your way around the festival you’ll be able explore our vibrant indoor and outdoor food markets and grab a tasty snack from the many exciting street food stalls. And by street food we mean delicious and innovative ‘food to go’ - not the usual fast food horrors!
You’ll be able to pick up some great culinary tips too from professional chefs in our demonstration kitchen and discover the real stories behind the food you buy at our ‘meet the producer’ sessions. You’ll be able to learn practical skills and new recipes, - and they’ll be plenty to keep kids entertained and interested too with cooking activities, films, smoothie bikes, games, tastings and competitions.
You’ll be invited to take part in Weston Super Mare’s very own Food Awards by voting for your favourite café, deli, restaurant, chef or local food shop; and follow our food trails, and enjoy special foodie events including a food inspired poetry evening, and the history of local food at Weston Museum, during Festival Fortnight (September 14th – 29th)
We haven’t forgotten that gardening and growing is an important part of the good food experience and we’ve including a ‘get growing’ section with a specialist seed producer, herb nurseries and plenty of advice on producing your own fruit and veg at home.
The festival weekend is a also a great chance to visit Weston super Mare’s many great cafés and restaurants who will be offering special festival menus and ‘meal deals’.
Weston super Mare’s best hotels and B&Bs will be also be offering special food festival weekend accommodation packages demonstrating that whatever the weather Weston super Mare is a great place to be.
And - just to show that we foodies are a very creative bunch both inside and outside the kitchen, you can enjoy our very own food inspired festival fringe with food related comedy, theatre and music.

Bicycle Love
I loved having a bike as a kid and teen, I have so many fond memories of many epic bike rides, Christmas presents of new bikes and even the functional purpose of getting me to and from work (a good 6 miles one way). But with work commutes being longer, the ability to drive a car and just my increasing laziness- I haven't owned or rode a bike for 8/9 years!
Recently, while in America, I saw a bike advertised on a student Facebook page for just £20- I asked Chris to go check it out for me and it's perfect- now looking forward to many more bike rides with my boy.
The point of this?? Well, head to the fountains in Bristol this Wednesday, 4th September (between 11-2pm) for your chance to snap up a refurbished bike. All bikes available have been serviced and come with guarentee so you know that your bike has had some personal TLC before being rehomed. Not only do you get to ignite some fond memories but you are assisting the cut down in congestion and pollution- every little helps- plus the bikes have been worked on in partnership with HMP Bristol.
If you are unable to attend this event or want to find out more, check out Life Cycle UK's website; http://www.lifecycleuk.org.uk/
